20 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch on size 9 needles
You should use the recommended gauge, but it does not have to be as precise as for a sweater. If you are knitting tighter than the recommended gauge, the stocking will be smaller and use less yarn. If you are knitting looser than the recommended gauge, the stocking will be larger, use more yarn and need more stocking stuffer presents. Try different size needles if necessary to obtain the correct gauge. |
